Julian Cuddihy found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity

Julian Cuddihy has been found not guilty of the murder of his parents by reason of insanity.

The 43-year-old man suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and killed his parents with an axe. 73-year-old Kathleen Cuddihy and 77-year-old James Cuddihy were killed at their family home in Churchtown, Carndonagh, Co Donegal on 22 October 2014.

After just 40 minutes of deliberations the jury returned a unanimous verdicts of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Justice Margaret Heneghan committed Mr Cuddihy to the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum in Dublin for assessment.

Cuddihy will return to court on 20 June for a doctor to put forward his recommendations for Mr Cuddihy’s care for the foreseeable future.
