Just Stop Oil has denied responsibility for the stunt in which a woman threw orange confetti at George Osborne and his wife at their wedding, reports Sky.

The former chancellor and Thea Rogers were the focus of Saturday’s event.

The woman was initially thought to be a protester from an environmental campaign group known for its attention-grabbing stunts using orange paint or powder.

But the group’s statement read: “As much as we applaud the use of orange confetti at this wedding, we were not responsible. If it was a form of protest – which is yet to be established – we applaud it and thank the person concerned. It was peaceful and not especially disruptive, but got massive media attention for Just Stop Oil’s demand,” reports Sky.

On Saturday, the couple looked confused as they were approached by a smartly dressed elderly woman as they were leaving St Mary’s Church in Bruton, Somerset, with a bag full of confetti.

The assistants approached the woman, who then walked away from the couple.

Mr Osborne’s spokesman said they did not believe it was a protest and the man said nothing.

Several MPs hit the purported stunt, including Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

“If they want to tackle climate change, engage in the policy answers, but they are not building support for their cause, they are doing the exact opposite. So it is counter-productive and it is rude frankly,” she said, reports Sky.

The confetti incident comes as Mr Osborne called in police to investigate alleged online harassment after he sent a “poisoned pen” email to wedding guests, politicians and journalists on Thursday.

The individual is not believed to be directly connected to Mr. Osborne, and their specific motivation is unclear.

Miss Rogers, 40, was an adviser to the Treasury to Mr Osborne, 52, when he was Chancellor.
