Justice is served: 17-yr-old gets 128 years in prison for murdering elderly couple during burglary

A 17-yr-old man convicted of the murder of an 82-yr-old Virginia man and robbery of his 73-yr-old wife was sentenced to 128 years in prison.

The Louisa County Commonwealth Prosecutor did not name the convicted killer when prosecutors announced their convictions for first degree murder, wilful injury and theft, among other things. Officials cited a policy prohibiting the disclosure of the names of young offenders, media reported.

The defendant was 16 years old when he entered Roger and Nancy Payne’s home in the Gordonsville area in November 2019, having previously shown up to suss out the location, authorities alleged. He returned two days later and told the couple he was watching them and knew they had money, prosecutors said.

He asked the elderly couple for money, brought them to the train tracks behind their house, and shot them with a sawed-off shotgun, prosecutors said.

Nancy Payne pretended to be dead and survived her injuries, authorities said. Authorities eventually caught the suspect driving the couple’s car in another Virginia county and found the shotgun in the trunk, investigators said.

Louisa County’s Commonwealth attorney Rusty McGuire said in a statement that prosecutors were pleased with the outcome of the case.
