The 48-yr-old from Sixmilebridge faced charges related to an altercation with a 12-year-old boy on his property. According to RTE, the jury, after over five hours of deliberation, returned a majority not guilty verdict. Gilligan’s defence argued he acted to protect himself and his property, which had been repeatedly vandalized.

The trial concluded with emotional scenes in court, and Gilligan, a respected former athlete, was acquitted of all charges and walked free from court.
