Bill Kenneally, a former national basketball coach, was sentenced at Waterford Circuit Court this morning.
When handing out the sentence, judge Eugene O’Kelly said that the 10 counts were but a sample of more than 70 instances of abuse attributed to Mr. Kenneally.
All offences took place over a four-year period back in the 80s, usually at Mr. Kenneally’s home or his vehicle.
Gardai were aware of a complaint against Mr. Kenneally back in 1987, but no charges arose at the time. His conviction derives from victims coming forward in 2012.
Mr. Kenneally groomed young boys for his own sexual gratification for years. As he came from a privileged background, he had the use of money when many of the boys he took advantage of were deprived. He used his money as a lure, initially as gifts, but later as debt that the boys had to pay off.
Due to the severity of the charges, the judged availed of the maximum sentence.
