Pop singer Katy Perry and her record label, Capitol, have been sentenced to pay £2.3m after losing a copyright infringement case brought forward by the relatively unknown Christian rapper Flame.
The rapper, whose real name is Marcus Gray, initially alleged that Perry had copied a substantial portion of his song ‘Joyful Noise’ for her hit ‘Dark Horse.’
Perry will have to fork out £453,000 personally, while Capitol will pay the rest.
Dark Horse, copied or not, proved to be a big hit for Perry, as the song spent four weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in early 2014 and earned the pop star a Grammy nomination.
