It’s a sad day for gamers worldwide, as the creator of the in-famous Konami code, Kazuhisa Hashimoto, has passed away.

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a and start. Those simple instructions would become a legendary cheat code for many games which those people of a certain age might remember fondly from the arcade hall days.

The story goes that Hashimoto, a game producer and programmer working for Konami, created the code so he could playtest Gradius on the NES, back in 1985. He then reportedly forgot to remove the code from the commercial version, and the legend took off. The code granted the player 30 lives, making the notoriously difficult game much easier to beat.
