Keir Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister After Two Years in Office

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation stepping down as leader of the Labour Party and paving the way for a leadership contest.

Less than two years after Labour’s landslide victory in July 2024 — which ended 14 years of Conservative rule with a 174-seat majority — Starmer bowed to mounting internal pressure. A sagging economy, policy flip-flops, cabinet resignations, poor local election results, and a stinging by-election loss to Reform UK contributed to the crisis.

In a statement outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he had “heard the answer from my parliamentary party” and would remain as caretaker prime minister until a successor is chosen, ensuring an “orderly” transition. Andy Burnham, the popular former Greater Manchester Mayor who recently returned to Parliament after a strong by-election win, is the clear favourite to replace him.

The move makes Starmer Britain’s latest in a revolving door of prime ministers — the country now faces its seventh leader in a decade. Critics highlighted challenges on immigration, energy costs, and economic stagnation, while supporters praised his decency and steady leadership during turbulent times.

Labour’s National Executive Committee is expected to set a swift timetable for the leadership election, with nominations likely opening soon. The contest will determine not only the next prime minister but also the direction of the party ahead of future elections.

Starmer’s departure marks a dramatic end to a tenure that began with high hopes but faced relentless headwinds.
