Kelly: “Anyone who boycotts paying their water charges will end up paying more in the long run”

The Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly has issued a stark warning to people who intend on boycotting the water charges but still claim the highly debated conservation grant.

Mr Kelly claimed that anyone who willingly tries to “pull a fast one” will end up paying a lot more money in the long run. Mr Kelly also warned that anyone who refuses to pay their charges will incur a number of penalties which will continue to add up over a longer period costing them significantly more money. Mr Kelly made his comments whilst speaking on RTE’s News at One: “They might think that they are making a gain now. “But ultimately they will pay more than anyone who just normally pays their bill, because they’ll have penalties upon penalties and probably extra costs as a result when it’s taken out of their wages.”

Mr Kelly further explained that new laws currently being introduced by the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald will force people to pay the penalties they face. Mr Kelly said: “They might think that they are making a gain now. But ultimately they will pay more than anyone who just normally pays their bill, because they’ll have penalties upon penalties and probably extra costs as a result when it’s taken out of their wages.”
