Kenny: “Calls for me to boycott meeting with US President Trump are populist”

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has slammed those who are calling on him to cancel his annual visit to the White House, saying their views are ‘populist’.

Mr Kenny’s comments come after a number of high profile ministers have called in him to cancel his plans to meet new US President Donald Trump this St Patricks Day, in the wake of President Trump’s new immigration policy that has come in for strong criticism in recent weeks.

Although Mr Kenny does not agree with president Trump’s new policy, he said the polite and appropriate way to voice his concerns would be in a face to face meeting.

The Taoiseach said: “The populist question that I shouldn’t go to the White House, it is a populist question yeah.”

“You always follow that line and that’s your right as you wish but I intend to go to the United States, I intend to speak directly to American President in the White House.”
