The taxi drivers are now appealing for donations to help fund a permanent drop-in centre within the city.

Taxi Watch was set up in November last year and 47 people have been helped.

About fifteen taxi drivers were trained in suicide prevention and alertness,

The founder of Taxi Watch Derek Devoy, spoke on Morning Ireland asking taxi drivers nationwide to consider setting up Taxi Watch in their counties.

Mr Devoy stated that while the service is badly needed in Kilkenny, this service is needed urgently all over the country.

However, the founder of Taxi Watch went on to say that there was a huge lack of places to take someone in distress.

Thomas Hayes Trust is endeavoring to set up a drop-in centre within Kilkenny city, to look over those at risk of taking their own lives.

Speaking of Taxi Watch’s success in assisting 47 people, Derek Devoy said he was urging taxi companies around the country to set up similar services.

Mr Devoy has made an appeal to the public to help fund this centre, which will be called Teach Tom.

Roughly €200,000 is needed to get the centre built and running.
