A young woman from Kilkenny is seriously ill in a Tokyo hospital after drinking a coffee she is allergic to.

Aika Doheny, in her twenties, had gone on vacation to Japan but a few weeks ago fell seriously ill while drinking coffee, reports the Mirror.

Ms Doheny is an alumnus of Presentation Secondary School and is studying at the National University of Ireland in Galway to become a research assistant.

It is believed that several efforts were made to try to relieve the allergic reaction she had to the drink with an Epipen, but the effects were limited and she was taken to a nearby hospital in Tokyo.

The young woman has been in intensive care for a few weeks and efforts are now being made to bring her back from Japan on an ambulance plane.

However, the cost to bring her home would exceed several hundred thousand euros and a planned fundraiser is to be launched soon to help fund the cost of repatriation to a hospital in Dublin.
