London planners say New Year’s Eve fireworks will be the biggest ever after covid stopped celebrations for two years

At the start of 2023, Londoners will be treated to a big fireworks display for the first time since before the pandemic, the mayor has confirmed.

Sadiq Khan said revelers “will be together again on the banks of the Thames’” when Big Ben rings in the New Year, reports Metro.

The plaza in front of the London Eye will see 100,000 visitors and ticket sales start on Friday.

It is one of the last large-scale public events to see a “return to normal” after the end of Covid restrictions and most official guidelines.

On New Year’s Eve 2021, the first iteration to take place during the restrictions, the traditional show was scrapped due to stay-at-home laws.

It has been replaced by a TV display of limited fireworks, lights and drones over various London landmarks.

The following year was originally scheduled to feature an in-person meeting in Trafalgar Square, but was cancelled days before due to the Omicron variant.

It’s been replaced by another crowdless fireworks display, as well as the UK’s largest drone show.

On January 1, 2022, just after midnight, a laser display can be seen on the Millennium Bridge with St Paul’s Cathedral behind it, an alternative to the usual New Year’s Eve fireworks display in central London.

Pre-pandemic exhibits tended to focus on one theme, such as the capital’s relationship with Europe or the centenary of women’s suffrage in Britain.

It’s unclear if that aspect of the show will return this year, although the mayor said there will be “updates” on what’s shown.

Tickets cost £15, a big increase from last year’s £10 price.
