The 5-metre-long female cetacean was discovered by locals, and according to Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IDWG), it possibly died from malnourishment.
According to sources, this is the 15th stranding event for this species on the IWDG database, and the first since 4 October 2010 in Co. Mayo.
A post-mortem will be carried out today, and it is hoped the skeleton will be preserved and put on display in the locality.
