The latest available figures show that Russia’s prison population decreased by over 23,000 people during September and October, with most inmates suspected of being sent as cannon fodder to Ukraine.

Most convicts who ‘volunteered’ for a stint at the front lines were swiftly dispatched to the Bakhmut meat grinder, where stiff Ukrainian resistance is slowly but surely eating into Russia’s quickly diminishing resources.

Bakhmut has been at the center of bitter fighting for months, and the town itself lies in ruins. Russia has committed sizable forces to the battle and sustained very heavy losses for largely insignificant gains.
