Latest figures suggest that the number of people who are currently homeless in Dublin has almost halved compared to this time last year

According to a recent report it is suggested that the number of people who are currently homeless in Dublin has almost halved compared to this time last year.

The figures come after the recent rough sleeper report found that there were 91 people sleeping sleeping rough on December 1st, compared to 168 on December 1st last year. The is credited to the fact that 500 more emergency beds were made available over the past year, whilst a welcome 739 people found permanent accommodation in the first half of this year.

The latest figures were welcomed by the CEO of the Peter McVerry Trust Pat Doyle, who said the drop in those sleeping rough was encouraging, but a lot more needed to be done. Mr Doyle told reporters: “Last year we had a record high, and after the death of Jonathan Corrie a number of beds were introduced which helped bring the number down, but obviously there are still 91 people on the street and we had hoped it would be lower.” “Although we’re glad it’s down from last year, we’re concerned there are 91 people on the street.”
