The Irish Navy vessel assisted in a rescue mission after a migrant boat carrying hundreds of people capsized in the Mediterranean earlier today.

It is understood that about 400 people have been saved, but 25 others lost their lives. There were between 500-600 passengers onboard the ship when it sank about 25 miles off the Libyan coast.

The death toll among migrants attempting to reach the Italian shoreline has surpassed 2,000 so far this year. This compares with 3,279 for the whole of 2014.
