People who have been diagnosed with a serious illness such as cancer or HIV are being urged to avoid pursuing an unauthorised treatment dubbed a “miracle cure” online.

The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) have warned patients that the procedure is highly dangerous and will not offer a cure. The procedure which involves injecting modified blood has caused numerous problems amongst patients who suffer from serious illness’s in the UK and Ireland. The regulatory authorities call comes after a number of websites have been setup providing false information which makes vulnerable people believe that Globulin component Macrophage Activating Factor (GcMAF) can cure medical conditions such as cancer, HIV and autism. According to various websites the miracle treatment works by modulating the immune system.

A spokesperson for the HPRA told reporters: “The HPRA understands from media reports that it is a blood product claimed to treat a range of conditions including cancer and autism.” “This medicine is not authorised and, therefore, has not been tested for quality, safety, and effectiveness and its benefit/risk in the claimed indications has not been independently verified. People who have purchased this product should not start treatment.”
