Leo Varadkar says Russian naval exercises will involve military vessels and protesting fishermen should not put themselves at risk

The Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said that fishermen planning to peacefully protest naval exercises due to be carried out by Russia next month, should be careful not to put themselves at risk.

According to the Irish Mirror, some members of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation plan to hold the protest, saying that the exercises could interfere with their livelihoods.

The matter has been discussed in recent days, as Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney is said to have asked the Russian Ambassador whether the exercises could be cancelled because they are “not welcome”.  The Ambassador said no to this request.

Earlier this week, Leo Varadkar said that he had not had a chance to speak to any of the fishermen working in the area in question but that he “would just say to them that these are military vessels. Whatever they choose to do in terms of any protests, just make sure that they don’t put themselves at risk.”
