Leo Varadkar will become first Taoiseach to attend Munich Security Conference

Leo Varadkar is in Germany, where he will attend the Munich Security Conference for the first time as Taoiseach in its 60-year history, reports Breaking News.

Micheál Martin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Tánaiste will also be present at the event this weekend.

Leading US politicians, such as Vice President Kamala Harris, will attempt to reassure Europe that America is still committed to NATO, but the battles in Gaza and Ukraine are expected to take centre stage.

Donald Trump declared over the weekend that members of the alliance that do not budget enough for defence would not be shielded, reports Breaking News.

The former US president’s remarks have drawn harsh criticism, raising concerns that, should he win the 2024 presidential election in November, European security may be jeopardised.

The premier international venue for discussing international security policy is thought to be the Munich Security Conference.

The dates of the event are Friday, February 16 through Sunday, February 18.

This evening, Mr. Varadkar is anticipated to attend bilateral meetings. On Saturday, he will participate in a neutrality conversation that will be facilitated by academic Dame Louise Richardson, reports Breaking News.
