Leo Varadkar will speak to Egyptian President about Ibrahim Halawa’s involvement in the Muslim brotherhood protests

The prosecution case in the trial of Ibrahim Halawa in Egypt is set to end later this month.

In April, Halawa asked the then Taoiseach Enda Kenny to help free him from his prison in Cairo after his trial was postponed.

21-yr-old Halawa was detained during Muslim Brotherhood protests in Cairo in 2013.

He was one of 400 people who were accused of conspiracy for murder.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said he welcomes the indications that the trial is now coming to an end but the government’s intervention doesn’t seem to end there.

The “now” Taosieach Leo Varadkar has confirmed he will talk to the Egyptian President over Halawa’s involvement in the Muslim Brotherhood protests.
