Less than 100 migrants have been deported since start of 2023, McEntee announces

Since the start of 2023, Ireland has denied refugee status to around 7,300 persons; of them, less than 100 have been deported, according to Minister for Justice Helen McEntee.

Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One, she said: “This is not where we want to be in terms of physically removing people, not only does that take much longer, not only is it much more costly, not only is it much more challenging, it is less effective,” reports RTE.

The minister said, “There are various different stages that then people can appeal…and you might have quite a high number of those in appeal,” when asked where the remaining 7,200 people were.

The Minister asserted yesterday that over 80% of asylum seekers in the Republic enter the country through land borders.

“I’d say it’s higher than 80%,” she said, in response to Fianna Fáil Senator Robbie Gallagher, noting that this is “a significant proportion” of all asylum seekers entering the State, reports RTE.
