A lioness, a first-time mother named Kigali, killed and ate its two cubs, mere days after they were born.
The incident happened at Leipzig Zoo in Germany in recent days.
Zookeepers say that the cubs may have shown signs of illness or unusual behavior, which may have triggered their mother to kill them. The cubs were fully consumed, so it’s not possible to do an autopsy.
The lioness’ behavior is known to happen in the wild sometimes, but tends to occur more often with animals in captivity, and almost always affects first-time mothers.
