The Eurozone will welcome its 19th member tonight, as the Baltic nation of Lithuania will enter the single currency area.

Lithuanians will be able to withdraw their first euros from a Vilnius bank machine just after midnight, an historic event punctuated by fireworks to celebrate the birth of a new year.

Lithuania has brought in 132 million individual banknotes from the German Bundesbank, but has minted its own euro coins.

Lithuanian euro coins will depict the national coat of arms and a knight on horseback with sword and shield. These motifs have appeared on the national currency since the 14th century.

The two currencies will circulate concurrently for a period of two weeks, while dual pricing will remain on display in shops until June.
