A beloved family pet that escaped during last week’s terrible weather has been found after a four-day rescue operation, reports The Mirror.

Russell, a 17-year-old Jack Russell terrier who is deaf, has arthritis and can barely see, ran away last week because of severe weather.

Jack Russell was adopted along with his brother Jack in 2006 by Rick and Susan Newnham, just a few years after moving to Cork from England and building a house and farm in Ballybane near Ballydehob.

They were both devastated when their four-legged friend escaped from the farm last week and jumped out of bed as if something had scared him.

While Rick immediately sprung into action to begin the search for Russell, Susan was in England for work and therefore unable to join the search.

Although Rick searched the area and surrounding farms, he eventually had to call off the search after several hours of overnight rain.

Meanwhile, Susan books the next flight home, hoping to help find their beloved friend who was at their side for 17 years.

Speaking to CorkBeo, Susan said: “He was inside, sleeping, and suddenly he started barking like crazy and running around in circles outside. My husband only took his eyes off him for a second to answer his phone, and he was gone. He thought he couldn’t have gotten that far – he’s very old and has arthritis – but he searched everywhere and couldn’t find him. I got home as soon as I could,” reports The Mirror.

“There was an immediate panic – I got on social media and put out posts on all the local Facebook pages. We were beside ourselves – couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep. He was always with us, and it was heartbreaking to think of him out in those storms alone,” Susan added, reports The Mirror.

Susan and Rick reported that their beloved pet is recovering at home, sleeping and eating. Though still shaky, they say he is improving with each passing hour.
