A resident in New Zealand took pictures of a cliff that collapsed after heavy rains in the Canterbury area.

Ange Protheroe recorded the moment when part of Klondyke’s terrace on the outskirts of the city of Timaru on the South Island crashed into the Rangitata River.

The collapse occurred shortly after the announcement of the local state of emergency.

The Timaru District Council said on Facebook that there were signs of new torrential rains in the Alpine basins for the rest of the weekend.

Residents were informed that they could be evacuated on short notice.
