Lockdown measures spark riots in the culturally enriched suburbs of Brussels




There has been serious social disorder on the streets of Brussels in the culturally enriched Anderlecht district after a, youth, accidentally killed himself when he drove his scooter in front of a police vehicle while fleeing a checkpoint established as part of the Coronavirus lockdown.

Shortly after the accident other migrant and migrant background youths began to riot and attack police and emergency service vehicles with Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad reporting calls for violent retribution against police on social media for the death.

Police spokeswoman Adeline Roty said:

“Despite the lockdown and the ban on gatherings, social media had called for a Saturday afternoon meeting in Anderlecht.”

Two police officers were injured, and one police vehicle was destroyed while several other police vehicles suffered significant damage during the violence and there was also significant property damage after youths’ riots and began starting fires.
