Low uptake of vaccinations in some parts of Ireland raises the specter of new epidemics

The low uptake of vaccinations in some areas of the country is prompting fears of the resurgence of contagious diseases like measles.

Statistics show that as much as 25% of children across certain areas are not receiving their regular vaccinations. Such a high percentage is a red line for the World Health Organization (WHO).

Health authorities are now warning that widespread lack of immunization may lead to virulent outbreaks of disease in the near future.

Medical officials are blaming campaigns of misinformation about the efficiency or potential side effects of vaccines, coupled with scaremongering by people with vested interests for the dramatic fall in vaccinations.
