Lucky escape: Six month old baby rescued by brave angler after a car slips off Knockaphort Pier into Lough Derg

There were dramatic scenes in Co Clare last Saturday afternoon as a baby left inside a vehicle almost drowned in Lough Derg.

According to The Clare Champion the terrifying incident which occurred last Saturday at approximately 1.30pm, involved a Dublin family who were visiting the popular attraction.

It is understood that the six month old infant almost drowned when the family vehicle he was sitting in slipped into the water after it rolled down Knockaphort Pier whilst his parents were outside the vehicle taking in the scenery.

Speaking to the paper one eyewitness named John Barry, gave his account of the terrifying incident after he narrowly escaped from being hit by the vehicle.

John told the paper: “I was in the water at the bow of my boat when a car passed me by, going at a considerable clip and it came dangerously close to me.”

“I was standing beside my boat, up to my waist in water, and the car came within inches of me. I didn’t see the car coming until I just heard screeching and I looked up.”

The would be hero angler further explained that he didn’t realise the seriousness of the situation until the baby’s distraught mother informed him that “there was a baby in the car”.

“She was running towards the car at this stage. The woman and I both went to the car. It was taking on considerable water. The water was up to my waist and the car had gone past me; the water was well over the seats in the car,” he said.

Although the terrifying incident happened in a matter of minutes both John and the baby’s mother were able to remove the baby safely from the car unharmed.
