Mairead McGuinness, a former EU Commissioner and Fine Gael politician, has been confirmed as her party’s candidate for the 2025 Irish presidential election. As the only nominee within Fine Gael, she secured the candidacy unopposed, with formal ratification expected at a party event in September. A native of Drogheda and former Vice-President of the European Parliament, McGuinness brings extensive experience in European politics and financial stability to the race.
Recent polls position her as a leading contender to succeed President Michael D Higgins, whose term ends this autumn after serving the maximum two terms. The campaign is anticipated to intensify in the coming months, with McGuinness expected to actively engage voters nationwide. Other potential candidates, including Independent TD Catherine Connolly, are also emerging, signaling a competitive race for the Áras.
