A major investigation in what caused the disastrous event to take place is starting this morning, with authorities claiming that major restructuring works had been carried out in recent years to ensure the foundations of the bridge were sound.

Thirty five people are now confirmed dead after a major bridge collapsed in the Italian city of Genoa.

The Morandi bridge, a key access point to the Italian Riviera and to France’s southern coast, came down after rough weather hit the port city of Genoa yesterday lunchtime.

Emergency crews are working tirelessly in an effort to find survivors who might be trapped underneath the rubble.
