A major overhaul of the Fuel Allowance was confirmed in Budget 2026, with thousands of Irish households set to benefit from higher payments and broader eligibility rules next year.
The Fuel Allowance, a vital welfare support to help cover rising energy costs in colder months, is currently worth €33 weekly and is paid from September to April, either every week or in two lump sums, reports The Mirror.
Under new measures announced in the budget, the weekly payment will rise by €5 to €38 from January 2026 – representing one of the most substantial increases in recent years.
Another significant update will see the Working Family Payment included as a qualifying payment for Fuel Allowance starting in March 2026, with successful applicants receiving backdated payments from January 2026, reports The Mirror.
Further changes due from September 2026 will allow people who transition from Disability Allowance or Blind Pension into work to retain their Fuel Allowance for a five-year period.
The Government estimates that around 460,000 households across Ireland will gain from the expanded scheme, reports The Mirror.
To qualify for the Fuel Allowance, applicants must meet a number of criteria. This includes being over 66, or under that age and in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment.
Applicants must also live in Ireland, pass a means test, and live alone or with certain approved individuals, reports The Mirror.
Those not eligible include people whose heating is already fully covered as part of their accommodation arrangement.
To get the Fuel Allowance, you must live alone, or with:
- A spouse, civil partner or cohabitant who qualifies for an increase on your pension or welfare payment, or receives a qualifying payment in their own right,
- Dependent children,
- A person receiving Carer’s Benefit who is caring for you or your spouse/partner/child on a full-time basis,
- Someone on short-term Jobseeker’s Allowance (less than 312 days) or
- Supplementary Welfare Allowance (less than 364 days),
- Someone getting a qualifying long-term payment and who would qualify for Fuel Allowance themselves,
- Someone aged 66 or over, reports The Mirror.
You can also qualify if living with a room renter whose tenancy doesn’t impact your Fuel Allowance eligibility, or someone you are housing through the Accommodation Recognition Payment.
Only one Fuel Allowance payment is issued per household. If multiple people qualify, the household must decide who will apply, reports The Mirror.
