A majority of Stormont Assembly members have for voted to legalise same-sex marriage in Northern Ireland, however DUP members have made sure this wont happen.
Democratic Unionists who are opposed to the motion today initiated a voting mechanism to prevent same-sex marriage from coming into law.
By deploying a petition of concern ahead of the vote, the DUP has been able to veto the motion, effectively blocking it from coming into law until a majority of both Unionists and Nationalists vote in favour of the motion.
This vote was the fifth time a motion to change Northern Ireland’s marriage laws came before the Assembly.
Northern Ireland is now the only part of the UK where civil marriage is denied to same-sex couples.
