Man arrested as large bonfire causes disturbances in Belfast.

Early this morning, police were called to the Sandy Row area of South Belfast.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue service were notified at 9.33 am and the fire was not extinguished until 10.19 am.

Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene and the bonfire was described as “well alight” when the fire services arrived on the scene.

A large bonfire was found in Days Hotel car park, Wellwood street and was deemed a serious
hazard.

The bonfire has since been extinguished but investigations are being carried out at present at
the scene.

The PSNI are tackling any disruptions to traffic.

A man in his 30’s has been apprehended by police and is being questioned.

Chief Inspector Robert Murdie stated that “NIFRS personnel have extinguished the fire but the area remains closed to traffic at this time. There are no further details at present”

The fire is being treated as deliberate and a full investigation is being carried out at the scene.
