Man charged after woman allegedly raped in park in Dundalk last Friday – suspect’s nationality is not allowed be made public

A man has been formally charged following what gardai suspect was a random attack in which a woman was allegedly raped in a Dundalk park during daylight hours, reports The Mirror.

The Irish Mirror has discovered that officers arrested a man after a woman was reportedly raped and sexually assaulted in a green area in Muirhevnamore at around 6pm last Friday.

It is believed that the victim did not know the man who was taken into custody, reports The Mirror.

A 49-yr-old man, who has an Irish address and whose identity cannot be disclosed for legal reasons, has since appeared at Dundalk District Court in relation to the alleged offence.

Garda Siobhan McCoy, based at Dundalk Garda Station, presented the details of the arrest, charges, and caution during a special court sitting on the Bank Holiday Monday, reports The Mirror.

The man is facing two charges of sexually assaulting a woman, including an accusation of rape.

These alleged crimes fall under Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act 1990, as amended by Section 37 of the Sex Offenders Act 2001, reports The Mirror.

He has been placed in custody and is expected to reappear before the court on a later date. Gardaí have described the matter as a “serious assault” in a statement released today.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have information in relation to this incident to contact them,” reports The Mirror.

“Any persons, including road users and pedestrians, who were in Muirhevnamore Park, Dundalk at approximately 6pm on Friday evening 1st August, 2025 and who may have footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí,” reports The Mirror.
