A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene and detained at a garda station in Waterford. He has since been charged and is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow morning.

It is understood that the accused and the deceased were known to one another, reports RTE.

The scene was secured to allow for a forensic examination, and the Office of the State Pathologist was informed.

Gardaí have said that investigations into the incident are continuing, reports RTE.

Cathaoirleach of the Dungarvan & Lismore Municipal District, Councillor Niamh O’Donovan, said the local community has been left deeply shocked and will rally around those impacted.

“It was an awful, awful shock when the incident and the news broke last night in community,” Cllr O’Donovan said, reports RTE.

“My thoughts are with the loved ones, the family, the friends of the deceased, and the community and neighbours waking up to the reality of this this morning.

“It is not appropriate for me to comment on the circumstances at the moment, and I would ask that everyone relies on the official communication lines with the investigation ongoing, reports RTE.

“We will be supporting everyone that has been affected. I think everyone is just lost for words this morning in our community,” the Fine Gael councillor added, reports RTE.
