Following a knife assault on a friar who was helping at the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin, gardaí charged a non-verbal man and placed him under detention in jail, reports RTE.

This morning, just around 10.30 a.m., Father Ademir Marques was hit in the head in a hallway of the homeless day facility on Bowe Street while clients were having breakfast.

He received care for a non-life-threatening injury at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.

At 10.45 a.m., Anthony Geraghty, 38, was taken into custody by Gardaí and charged with assault causing hurt to Fr. Marques at the Bridewell Garda Station, reports RTE.

He didn’t request bail when he appeared before Dublin District Court Judge Mark O’Connell during a late session.

Living at a hostel on Fitzwilliam Street Lower in Dublin 2, Mr. Geraghty wore grey tracksuit pants, trainers, and a blue pullover, reports RTE.

Police Jane Mitchell reported to the court that Mr. Geraghty “made no response” to being charged and cautioned, and that he was facing a bail objection.

Amanda Connolly, the defence attorney, informed Judge O’Connell that she may “short circuit matters” anyway, reports RTE.
