Man claims that off-duty garda attacked him as he was taking selfies in popular Dublin pub

A Dublin gardai has been charged with indecently assaulting a man in a bar who testified he was “taking selfies” and not photographing officers and their off-duty colleagues, reports Breaking News.

Garda Robert Hennessy pleaded not guilty to assaulting Michael Finnegan, a social worker, on December 11, 2019, at Cafe N Sen, Dawson Street, Dublin.

The specialist unit officer who carried out the surveillance is being prosecuted following an investigation by the Garda Ombudsman (GSOC).

His trial without a jury began on Friday at Dublin District Court.

The evidence is that Finnegan (40) said he was happy and this day was a milestone as he passed his first exams at Trinity College. He went for drinks at the Pavilion and then to Cafe en Cine, reports Breaking News.

He told Diarmuid Collins, prosecuting, that he was taking a selfie on his phone and to his left were two attractive women in their 30s who he “made an attempt to chat them up”, reports Breaking News.

Mr Finnegan said: “He mentioned he was garda intelligence; I think he was attempting basically to get me to leave the girls alone, but I was not rude to them; I was polite,” reports Breaking News.
