Man dies as security at Tesco allegedly refuse first aider use of defibrillator

The death of a man in his 90’s died this week having collapsed from a suspected heart attack outside a Tesco Extra store in Gillingham, Kent, reports the Metro.

A first aider came to the elderly man’s assistance and performed CPR. Another onlooker ran into Tesco’s to get a defibrillator but security staff allegedly refused to hand over the potentially life-saving medical apparatus. Reports claim security allegedly refused the device saying “it wasn’t for public use.”

There have also been alleged claims that Tesco’s staff phoned the police to report an attempted theft of the defibrillator.

A spokesperson for Kent Police said: ‘A call was received at 9.59am on February 3 where a member of staff reported the attempted theft of a medical device from inside Tesco in Courtney Road, Gillingham. ‘During this call the caller was informed there was a genuine medical emergency nearby and this was not an attempted theft.’
