Man held by gardaí over €69,000 drugs being found in his bedroom

A man arrested in connection with the seizure of €69,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis in Dublin has been remanded in custody, reports Breaking News.

Ian Byrne, 40, of Dane Road, Balbutcher Lane, Ballymun, appeared before Judge John Hughes in the District Court in Dublin on Saturday.

Judge John Hughes set bail at €1,000 and ordered Mr Byrne to sign an independent bond of €5,000 before being released.

During the search on Friday, Gardaí are said to have seized cocaine worth €57,000 and cannabis worth €12,000, reports Breaking News.

Garda Peter Elliot refused bail, citing the amount of drugs allegedly found in the defendant’s bedroom.

The court heard that the unemployed defendant did not respond to the charges.

The Garda agreed with defense solicitor Andrew Molony that his client had no warrant history and witness tampering was not a problem.

The officer also said he would agree to a conditional release.

In setting bail, Judge Hughes said he took into account Mr Byrne’s financial circumstances, reports Breaking News.

He told Mr Byrne that he would also have to surrender his passport and, on release, report to his local Garda train station every day, observe an 11pm to 6am curfew and remain reachable by phone in always.

Mr Byrne was remanded in custody and it was agreed to release him on bail on those terms and to appear in Knock Seimre District Court on 16 May to receive instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The defendant told the court that he was suffering from seizures and was in hospital for a few days up to Thursday, but did not raise an objection. Judge Hughes directed medical care while in custody, reports Breaking News.

Legal aid was granted.
