A man in his 80s has sadly passed away following an accident late last night in Co. Mayo.

The man, who was driving his car, was caught in flooding last night near Doogart on the Northern side of Achill Island, Co. Mayo around 10pm last night.

It is reported that the man was a retired clergyman from England who worked as a counselling psychologist in Mayo.

Efforts by locals to reach the man who was trapped in his car were unsuccessful and they forced to wait for emergency services to arrive.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was transported to Mayo General Hospital for a post mortem examination.

Gardaí re currently investigating the circumstances of the incident, however it is reported that the roads in the area are in highly dangerous conditions following heavy rainfall last night and drivers are being urged to drive with extreme caution.

A Met Éireann weather warning still remains in place and multiple roads are impassable including the R341 to Cleggan, the Sky road and the Beach road in Clifden.
