Man jailed for eight years over rape of woman when she was asleep

An eight-year jail sentence was imposed on a man who sexually assaulted a lady while she slept in bed next to her partner and her infant child, reports RTE.

At a trial held in Central Criminal Court on March 26, 2021, Shaun O’Donnell, 34, of Woodlands Way, Whinmore, Leeds, UK, was found guilty by a jury of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault at a property in Donegal.

During an earlier hearing, the prosecutor, Mark Lynam SC, was informed by a local detective garda that O’Donnell had spent the previous evening having drinks with the woman and her companion.

The couple was sleeping next to their infant when he got into bed the next morning and sexually assaulted the wife, reports RTE.

Before turning back and seeing it was O’Donnell, the woman originally believed it was her spouse. Before telling her spouse and family, she left the room and went to the shower.

When questioned, O’Donnell said he had no memory of the incident. During the gardaí questioning, he refuted the claim.

O’Donnell has a history of convictions, including ones for reckless driving and violence. In the UK, he works in construction, reports RTE.

She informed the judge that while she wanted O’Donnell to be named, she did not want her identity to be made public.

Judge David Keane sentenced O’Donnell, stating that her crime was a “fundamental, almost indescribable breach of trust” that happened in the victim’s house with her boyfriend and little child there, reports RTE.
