Man says he was exercising free speech when he called gardai scumbags at Dail protest and avoids jail time

A protester who called gardaí “scumbags” and claimed he was exercising his right to free speech, as well as interfering with an arrest during a controversial protest outside the Dáil earlier this year, has avoided jail, reports Breaking News.

Father-of-five Philip Keogh (45), of Griffith Park, Finglas, was charged under the Public Order Act on September 20 with threatening, abusive and offensive behavior and obstructing police officers on Molesworth Street.

Around 200 protesters staged a rally outside Leinster House after the Dáil resumed operations after the summer break, leading to several arrests, reports Breaking News.

Keogh, who is unemployed due to disability, denies the allegations and faces a trial at Dublin District Court.

Judge Susan Fay found him guilty and fined him €350, to be paid within four months, reports Breaking News.
