It what is thought of a first of its kind suffered a 32-year-old man suffered an “unbearable” 12-hour long erection that was attributed by doctors to his regular cannabis use.
The first case of marijuana-related priapism (prolonged erection of the penis) in a patient where all other known causes have been excluded was recorded by scientists in the US after a man went to the Coliseum Medical Centres twice in two weeks complaining of erections lasting 12 and six hours.
The patient told doctors about this regular cannabis use and after numerous other factors were ruled out it was determined that the man’s priapism is likely attributed to his drug use.
Priapism can be triggered by the use of other drugs including cocaine and prescription drugs such as anti-depressants, but this is the first such case caused by cannabis.
