A man in the UK who trolled Captain Sir Tom Moore the day after he died has been found guilty of sending a “grossly offensive” tweet.

According to the Metro, 36-year-old Joseph Kelly tweeted that Mr. Moore should “burn auld fella buuuurn”.  Captain Sir Tom is considered a hero after the 100-year-old raised more that £32 million for the NHS.  He caught the imagination of the public when he set out to walk 100 laps around his garden before he turned 100 in April. His family spoke about how proud he was of his legacy and the Queen knighted him in summer 2020.

In dealing with Kelly’s tweet, Lanark Sheriff Court heard how the “gratuitous insult” was made “with only offence in mind”.

Sir Tom saw his fundraising achievements marked during the New Year’s drone display in London, another exciting event for his family.  The comment by Kelly was particularly hurtful as it referred to his service in WWII, with Kelly’s full tweet reading “the only good Brit soldier is a deed one, burn auld fella buuuuurn.”  His family released a statement to say that he had been taken to hospital.  Thankfully, they were able to be with Sir Tom before he died.

It is expected that this incident will make other people think twice before tweeting horrible comments.
