Man who was fired when his boss saw him on holidays gets €12,500

After being sacked on the spot when he arrived home, a used car salesperson who ran into his superiors on a sun break and was told he “should have been in work” has won €12,500 for unjust dismissal, reports RTE.

In response to a case filed under the Unfair Dismissals Act of 1977 by former employee Gary Maloney against Bill Griffin Motors Ltd., the Workplace Relations Commission rendered the award.

Regarding his July 2022 request for annual leave for the week of October 10, that same year, Mr. Maloney stated, “I didn’t get a yes, I didn’t get a no,” reports RTE.

He also mentioned that the company’s sales director had informed him, “Ah, it should be okay.”

Mr. Maloney informed the WRC that the dates of the holiday were paid for by his partner, reports RTE.
