Marry me? The number of marriages in Ireland in 2023 is down by almost 9% on 2022




In 2023, 21,159 marriages were recorded in Ireland; this represents an 8.7% decrease from 2022 to 2023, reports Breaking News.

The total number of weddings in 2023 was 4.2% higher than the pre-pandemic 2019 numbers.

Compared to 2022, the average age of brides and grooms rose to 35.8 years for brides and 37.7 years for men in 2023.

In same-sex weddings in 2023, the average age of the men was 40.8 years, while the average age of the women was 38.0 years, reports Breaking News.

In 2023, Roman Catholic marriage ceremonies accounted for 35% of all weddings for couples of different sexes, with civil ceremonies following closely behind at 32%.

For same-sex couples, a civil ceremony was the most preferred option (52%). The most common day for weddings was Friday.

In 2023, July was the most popular month for same-sex marriages, while August was the most popular month for marriages between people of different sexes, reports Breaking News.

All weddings registered in Ireland in 2023 were the source of the data used by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) to construct weddings 2023, which was released on Friday.

Seán O’Connor, a statistician in the vital statistics division, commented on the study, stating: “In 2023, there were 21,159 weddings in Ireland, with 646 of these being same-sex unions,” reports Breaking News.
