Martin not happy as new poll shows government satisfaction falls drastically

Micheal Martin isn’t happy with another poll that shows his party in a bad light.

According to the most recent Ipsos B&A poll published in The Irish Times, the party’s supporters now favour the leader by a margin of four to one.

However, among all voters who gave an opinion, the majority believe that Martin should resign as leader of his party, reports Breaking News.

Martin’s rating has rebounded following a sharp decline after Fianna Fáil’s poor performance in last year’s presidential election campaign, positioning him once more as the most popular party leader.

Support for Sinn Féin has fallen by around three points, though it remains the leading party with 24 per cent, reports Breaking News.

Fianna Fáil follows at 19 per cent (up two points), while Fine Gael holds steady at 18 per cent, reports Breaking News.

Among smaller parties, the Social Democrats stand at 7 per cent (up two), Labour is on 4 per cent (down two), the Green Party registers 4 per cent (up one), People Before Profit-Solidarity is at 2 per cent (unchanged), Aontú is at 3 per cent (unchanged), and Independent Ireland is on 4 per cent (up two), reports Breaking News.

Satisfaction with the Government overall has declined by one point to 30 per cent, reports Breaking News.

This figure has been dropping since the second half of 2025 and is now at its lowest level in six years, comparable to the period just before the 2020 general election under the Fine Gael-Independent administration.

Independents and others are at 16 per cent (down one), with comparisons drawn to the previous Irish Times/Ipsos poll from last October, reports Breaking News.

Undecided voters, excluded from the party support figures, have risen to 27 per cent, up four points since October, reports Breaking News.

These latest results partly reverse trends from the prior poll, in which Fianna Fáil and Martin experienced significant losses in support while Sinn Féin recorded a notable gain.

Fine Gael leader Simon Harris has seen his satisfaction rating drop by four points to 31 per cent, and Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald has also fallen by four points to 35 per cent, reports Breaking News.

The poll featured a direct question on Martin’s leadership future, as reported by The Irish Times.

When asked whether he should step down or continue as leader of Fianna Fáil, 43 per cent of those with an opinion said he should step down, while 39 per cent favoured him remaining; 18 per cent were unsure.

Among Fianna Fáil voters, however, Martin commands strong backing – 79 per cent want him to stay as leader, compared with just 17 per cent who prefer he steps down, reports Breaking News.

A substantial majority of Fine Gael voters also support him, whereas Sinn Féin and Independent voters are overwhelmingly opposed, reports Breaking News.

The poll was carried out among a representative sample of adults aged 18 and over, using 120 sampling points across all constituencies.

The Irish Times/Ipsos B&A series relies on face-to-face sampling, with in-home personal interviews conducted between January 30th and February 3rd. A total of 1,200 interviews were completed, with a margin of error estimated at plus or minus 2.8 per cent, reports Breaking News.
