Martin promises that the government will build 50,000 social homes and make housing more affordable for young people

After a week that saw young people in their 20s, 30s and 40s practically see Micheal Martin, Leo Varadkar and Eamon Ryan wave goodbye to their hopes of ever owning their own house, the Taoiseach has hit out at critics claiming that the government will make owning a house a priority.

The Taoiseach has said that it is the government’s intention to build more social housing and to make housing more affordable for younger people.

Speaking in the Dail, the Taoiseach said that the government intends to build 50,000 social homes.

He went on to say that he led Fianna Fail in to government to make a housing a fundamental right and he fully intends to honour that commitment.

Martin’s comments came after he face stiff criticism from opposition TD’s who have questioned the Government’s handling over the recent housing crisis.
