Martin says 40,000 new homes are needed every year due to huge population growth in Ireland

Tánaiste states that 40,000 new homes are needed each year for at least seven years to keep up with population growth, reports Breaking News.

Michael Martin acknowledged that numbers may be needed beyond the end of the decade to meet continued demand.

He defended the government’s housing record, saying that despite the war in Ukraine, 30,000 buildings were completed last year.

Speaking to the Talking Bollocks podcast, Mr Martin said population growth is inevitable.

I think population is going to continue to increase – we have the lowest youth unemployment rate in Europe at the moment,” he told podcast hosts Terence Power and Calvin O’Brien, reports Breaking News.

His comments come after unpublished Housing Commission research suggested Ireland may need to build 62,000 homes a year by 2050 to meet demand – almost double the annual target in the government’s master plan for the decade.

The study, presented to Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien last November, shows that Ireland needs between 42,000 and 62,000 new homes each year, reports Breaking News.

However, as part of Mr O’Brien’s Housing for All strategy, the target is 33,000 average annual buildings over the 2030 period.
